The Meridian City Council voted 4-0 in favor of bans that will prohibit texting while driving in the city — called “Kassy’s Law” according to a city spokesman. Liz Catherman thanked the mayor and the council for passing the ban on texting while driving and honoring her daughter, Kassy Kerfoot, City Attorney Bill Nary said. Kerfoot, a 2009 Meridian High School graduate, died on Dec. 29 after suffering fatal injuries in an accident that occurred when she was texting while driving. Those who violate the texting ban face a fine of $75. Those who violate the ban three times face a fine of $300 or up to 90 days in jail.
